Description of the programmes in Public Health Science

Degree

The education can be completed with a bachelor's degree or a master's degree. The bachelor programme of three years leads to a Bachelor of Science in Public Health. After two additional years of study a master's degree can be achieved: Master of Science in Public Health. Both the bachelor and the master programmes are taught in Danish, but both the course in International Health in the bachelor programme and some elective courses are taught in English.

Aim and background

The study programmes have been developed in co-operation between the Faculties of Health Sciences, Social Sciences, Natural Sciences and Humanities at University of Copenhagen. The Study administration and the majority of academic staff members are employed at the Department of Public Health. The aim of the study programmes is to qualify the students for public and private activities related to health planning, health administration, as well as research, teaching, analyses, development planning and counselling in the field of public health. The programmes have a strong emphasis on methodologies, quantitative and qualitative, and on health promotion and disease prevention.

Courses and study structure - bachelor level:

The Bachelor's programme aims at giving the students a broad knowledge of theories and methods in public health and provides qualifications to work with health problems as they relate to general living conditions of the population. It encompasses 120 ECTS, whereof the last 30 are elective including the bachelor thesis.

Courses and study structure - master level:

The Master's programme is constituted by 30 ECTS compulsory courses in methodology and 60 ECTS elective courses. Students can choose courses that are offered at the department - a new set of elective courses is offered each semester. Another opportunity is to attend courses at other departments and programmes within the university, other Danish universities or abroad. During the last semester students write the Master thesis.
